Born and raised in Fort Collins, Colorado Evan Zamba got into playing music through his fascination with 80’s hardcore punk that his dad showed him (Misfits, The Cramps, Black Flag, and Dead Kennedy’s) and Tyler, the Creator/Odd Future. As Evan put it, "I was 15 and the angry, suburban teenage angst just spoke to me. I loved that these artists were basically kids making what they loved with what little they had and shared it with the rest of the world." The DIY attitude stuck and he bought a bass. "I could barely play and tried forming punk bands of my own but they always fell through."
Drawing inspiration from bands like Joy Division, The Banshees, and The Cure, Evan's project Sportstar formed as a result of many things different things coming together and falling apart. "Around this time another band I was in fell apart and I had to focus on making my own songs come to life. As quarantine began and I had all the time in the world."
"Some of the first real songs that I’ve written are on this EP (Taste of Grace, parts of Dusty+Stone, Instrument, and Swoon). In a lot of ways, I feel this EP is a love letter to the goth and janglepop idols that I loved so much (the Johnny Marrs, King Krules, Joy Division, and Cures of the worlds)"
"I chose Sportstar a little arbitrarily but I suspect it’s for maybe 3 reasons; maybe because it’s my favorite Alex G song, maybe because subconsciously it’s from an album of very different styles and reflects this EP, and maybe because it has a sort of non-binary ring that works as a blanket descriptor of my music and an extension of myself as an artist."
